Since 2009, the Ford Fusion has been a consistently safe sedan, favored by Jacksonville drivers who like to know they'll reach their destinations in once piece, come what may. It has earned at least a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, if not a Top Safety Pick+ since that year.

That is, until last year.

The 2016 Fusion, for the first time in seven years, did not earn the IIHS's highest award. The reason, it turns out, was not because the 2016 model was less safe than the 2015 model, but because the IIHS tightened up its standards.

Fortunately, Ford was already working on the 2017 model-year update, which would prove safer, and more feature-rich than ever before. Not only does the 2017 Fusion meet or exceed the highest possible ratings given by the IIHS in all five crashworthiness tests, it also comes with a newly upgraded Pre-Collision System. In track tests, this system was able to detect obstacles and automatically brake, preventing collisions at both slow (12mph) and high (25mph) speeds.

The 2016 Ford F-150 also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick this year, the only full-size pickup to do so.
