Can You Drive a Deafening Drag Racer Every Day & Not Face the Wrath of Your Neighbors?

The 2018 Mustang GT roars to life in a thunderous cacophony. It is more powerful than ever before, with a 460-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine, and an all-new Drag Strip mode that allows it to speed to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

It even comes standard with electronic line-lock, tempting you to smoke out your tires at every opportunity.

It's your neighbors' worst nightmare.

Ford engineer Steve von Foerster has experienced automotive-based neighborly tension first hand. One morning, his Shelby GT350 was so loud, his neighbors called the cops. He didn't blame them. "I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can't annoy people like that in your neighborhood," von Foerster.

He came up with an idea that would let Mustang enthusiasts enjoy the full track-worthy roar of the engine, and also keep the peace in a sleepy neighborhood.

It's called Quiet Start, and Quiet Exhaust. These use an active valve performance exhaust system to tailor volume levels, allowing drivers to pre-program times of day when the car should be quiet, lowering the decibel level to about the volume of a dish washer. Drivers can also set the exhaust to Track mode, Sport mode, or Normal.
